My family spent years as members of the BioPark. Around the holidays, they do a fabulous outdoor light show at the botanical gardens, called the River of Lights. It is a don’t miss event for families but bundle up, even on warm days the temperature gets quite low when the sun goes down.
Culinary Delights:
Albuquerque is a culinary haven, blending traditional Southwestern flavors with modern twists. Indulge in a culinary journey through Old Town, where local eateries serve up signature dishes like green chile enchiladas, carne adovada, and sopapillas drizzled with honey. For the true foodie experience, embark on the New Mexico Green Chile Food Trail, a spicy exploration of the region’s most delectable dishes.
Green or Red? is the state question of New Mexico. This refers to the type of chili sauce poured over many local dishes. Green chili is a sauce made of Anaheim or similar green chilis similar to Salsa Verde, it is full of chunks of peppers. Red chili is a smooth, deeply red sauce made from ground dried red chilis made into a gravy like sauce. Which is spicier? That depends on the chilis used. Feel free to ask your server in any restaurant and there is noting wrong with asking for the chili on the side. Just like salad dressing, many people have a preference for the amount of chili they want on their food.
Notes About New Mexico Chili Dishes
Fair warning – I always recommend to requesting chili on the side because then you know it is not in the food. Funny story about my Mom visiting me in New Mexico the first time, the restaurant accidentally give her chili in her food when she requested none and it was under the melted cheese. She was in tears from the heat before we realized that her food had rather hot chili in it and she thought that was the “no chili” version. The restaurant brought her a new plate and apologized but her taste buds where overwhelmed by the chili for some time. If you aren’t used to chili, ‘on the side’ lets you control and add a little more until you are at the right level of heat for you.
There are certain dishes that are made with the chili in them and you cannot request without – green chili stew or enchiladas are two common examples. Requesting these without the green chili would be like requesting lasagna with the tomato sauce on the side or Texas chili (soup) without the spicy.

Albuquerque weather is vary rarely prohibitive of outside activities. It is sunny most days – around 300 days per year. In the summer there are monsoon style rain showers. You can watch the clouds build up during the day over the mountains and they let loose in the afternoon for short burst.
